Presentation as inivited speaker by Professor Ton Koonen, Eindhoven University of Technology

Abstract
By two-dimensionally steered infrared optical pencil beams, ultra-high speed wireless communication can be established to individual users in a highly energy-efficient way, while also providing high privacy and congestion-free access. Many users can be served simultaneously via a fibre-optic backbone network, and the beam steering is established by remote wavelength tuning and passive diffractive elements. We will present the system concept, key and our laboratory demonstrator showing the delivery of multiple 10 Gbit/s Ethernet high-definition video streams and the autonomic beam steering aided by device localization.

He will be speaking at the conference.

About Ton Koonen
Ton Koonen is full professor in Eindhoven University of Technology since 2001, since 2004 chairman of the group Electro-Optical Communication Systems, and since 2012 vice-dean of the department Electrical Engineering.

From 2016 to 2019, he was scientific director of the Institute for Photonic Integration at Eindhoven University of Technology. Before 2001, he worked for more than 20 years in applied research in industry, amongst others in Bell Labs – Lucent Technologies. He is Bell Labs Fellow (1998), IEEE Fellow (2007), OSA Fellow (2013).

In 2012 he won an Advanced Grant in optical wireless communication, the most prestigious personal grant from the ERC. His current research interests include access and in-building fiber networks, radio-over-fiber techniques, optical wireless communication techniques, and spatial division multiplexed systems.

About Eindhoven University of Technology
Eindhoven University of Technology is a young university, founded in 1956 by industry, local government and academia. Today, their spirit of collaboration is still at the heart of the university community. We foster an open culture where everyone feels free to exchange ideas and take initiatives.

Eindhoven University of Technology offers academic education that is driven by fundamental and applied research. Our educational philosophy is based on personal attention and room for individual ambitions and talents. Our research meets the highest international standards of quality. We push the limits of science, which puts us at the forefront of rapidly emerging areas of research.

Eindhoven University of Technology combines scientific curiosity with a hands-on mentality. Fundamental knowledge enables us to design solutions for the highly complex problems of today and tomorrow. We understand things by making them and we make things by understanding them.

Our campus is in the centre of one of the most powerful technology hubs in the world: Brainport Eindhoven. Globally, we stand out when it comes to collaborating with advanced industries. Together with other institutions, we form a thriving ecosystem with one common aim – to improve quality of life through sustainable innovations.

About the Department of Electrical Engineering
The past 50 years, Electrical Engineering has radically changed society. No other discipline had such an impact. Although often invisible, today’s society is pervasively and completely dependent on the products that Electrical Engineering has produced.

The next 50 years
During the next 50 years an even greater change is expected. In relevant areas such as communication, care, energy and mobility, large connected systems, with ever increasing complexity, will emerge, which can only be successful and cost-effective, by knowledge generated by Electrical Engineering. The implementation, analysis and control of these large, complex connected systems, in as far as they are concerned with the manipulation of electric and electromagnetic phenomena, is selected as the scientific domain of the Department. The Department focuses in particular on aspects with respect to hardware implementation and the implications for higher system levels.
