Photonic integration has become a mature technology and is being used in high volume in fiber-based communication networks, both for long haul and short span connections. In this presentation we will look at what role this technology can play in optical wireless networks. What are the similarities, but also what are the differences?
What drives you?
I want to bridge the gap between the excellent photonics research that is happening in The Netherlands and the industry sectors that can use this technology to make real products that have impact on peoples lives.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
The convergence of optical and electronic signal processing at low cost and in high volume
What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
More stable and more flexible bandwidth allocation will lead to more efficient networks where it will be possible to further optimize for energy efficiency on a global level
What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Lack of flexibility in current network infrastructure and data security
If we want to provide fast and reliable communication channels at every corner of the world, we need to do this in a clever way, which means we need more intelligence and more flexibility in our networks.
Boudewijn Docter is President and co-founder of EFFECT Photonics, a spin-off from TU Eindhoven, making components for fiber-optic networks based on photonic integrated circuits. Dr. Docter has a PhD in Photonics from TU Eindhoven and a MSc in Electronics from Twente University.
